MYTH: It doesn’t really matter whether a person has health insurance.
FACT: About 18,000 Americans die each year because they don’t have health coverage, according to the Nonpartisan Institute of Medicine.

I took an entire class on health economics and it depends on how you look at it. I have to digg through my notes and get some sources. But I think that this might be slightly wrong. In other words those that are insured and uninsured are just as healthy.

Thanks for the comment Jamie. According to the Myths/Facts on that website they cite their source for that myth as: http://www.census.gov/prod/2006pubs/p60-231.pdf

Page 29, table 8.

From that table, although I don't understand it completely I see for 2005 a total number of uninsured people as 46,577 (in thousands) and below that the number of non-hispanic whites at 22,144. That is just under 50%.

I'm not sure about the true accuracy or how the data was determined, but for what it's worth that is where they came to their conclusion. Thanks for bringing that to my attention, I see what you're saying about a total number.

I am not agree with the following myth:

MYTH: Most uninsured people in the United States are minorities.
FACT: Non-Hispanic whites make up half of the uninsured.

Non-Hispanic whites represent 70% approx, according to http://www.alertnet.org/db/cp/usa.htm . Probably I am wrong by +/- 10% (I had to do some math); the myth said than only 50% of the total is Non-Hispanic white, that means that the share of white with insurance is much bigger than others. In conclusion, I don't consider fair to interpret the myth as total number, for me, it's fair to read it as the percentage of this race, and then the myth is not a myth anymore.

This is my opinion, great blog,
