Another week has come and gone so that means it is time to recap what is being discussed across the personal finance realm. So, while you enjoy some of these great posts from the past week don’t forget to enter for your chance to win the book On My Own Two Feet in the giveaway and Q&A session with the authors from the book.
Turn $80 Into $5,000 With Minimal Risk - The Silicon Valley Blogger explains how under $100 and some time has generated a 6,150% return. If you don’t own a home or haven’t done any landscaping before you may be shocked at how expensive plants can be.
Agree On Finances Before You Get Married - As Henry explains, it is probably a good idea to hash out finances with your soon-to-be spouse before making it official. A little preparation beforehand can save you from arguments in the future.
Efficient Frugal Shortcuts - If you’re Lazy like me then the Lazy Man has some easy additional shortcuts to being frugal that The Simple Dollar mentioned earlier in the week.
Jim Hates Overdraft Whiners - This is something I entirely agree with and it goes for late fees as well. Having worked in a bank before I had to deal with people on a daily basis who came in yelling at the bank for charging an overdraft fee. And these weren’t honest mistakes where someone miscalculated by a dollar or two, it was almost always blatant hundreds of dollars spent that they simply didn’t have, yet it was somehow our fault.
Are Real Estate Agents Worth the Money? - Ben examines the true cost of having a real estate agent helping to sell your home and whether or not they are worth it. I think it depends on your particular market but they can be worth their commission and even more in many cases.
Wal-Mart: Love Them or Hate Them? - I really don’t care either way as the closest Wal-Mart is over 30 miles away and we rarely go there. I personally just shop wherever I can get a decent deal while still being convenient. But for whatever reason so many people have very strong opinions about the chain and FMF takes a look at the pros and cons that get people so riled up.
What Do You Have Against Credit Cards? - Golbguru drops the gloves and wants to hear what people have against (or for) credit cards. I don’t have anything against them and I see them as simply a financial tool. As with any tool there is a proper way to use it.
Picking Stocks Like a Guru - Thanks to technology you can now run stock screens that will identify stocks that meet the criteria of great investors such as Benjamin Graham and Peter Lynch. Of course these types of screens shouldn’t account for your entire stock selection process but it can be a good starting point.
Eight Things to Consider When Buying Someone Out - The Mighty Bargain Hunter has some great tips to consider when you plan on buying someone out. This is especially important if you are an eBay seller looking to purchase a bunch of inventory.
Eco-Friendly Energy Savings - Nickel has highlighted David Bach’s list with ways to save the money while saving the planet. Most tips are fairly reasonable and most homeowners could do these with minimal inconvenience.
The Cubicle Warrior’s Guide to Office Jargon - If you work in an office then you are probably familiar with many of the annoying phrases and jargon that gets tossed around the office. Lifehacker highlights some of the jargon from Penelope Trunk’s new book.
