I would say that I am one of those that has not updated my beneficiaries on some of my policies in years. I find that people come in and out of my life but I never remember to update the policies as "it is not really related" and yes I am going to live forever.

A not-real-life example that got me thinking about this recently was in Ugly Betty. I was just watching the 1st season and there's a huge blow-up over who is officially the next in line to take over the company when the dad can't run it for a period. Not quite as tragic as a death, but reminds one to keep things up to date. The dad was about to update it right before he was out of commission. But he didn't.

Good coverage of a gruesome topic. It was a pain to get it all straightened out after getting married. If I'd passed, pretty much nothing would've gone to my husband, since I had my sister as a beneficiary when I was single. That was one benefit of the combining-finances shuffle: we got the beneficiary changes taken care of relatively quickly.
