Although I've never heard about the grass length thing it actually makes a lot of sense. Great post. All you need is lots of good healthy grass that's mowed high, put some compost down every year. That's why I recommended Eco-Lawn above. I've been itching to get it ever since I moved in to my new house but other things have just been priorities over the lawn recently.
