Friday Finance Findings for December 12th – Talking to Suze Orman Edition

Another Friday is upon us, and that means another round of finance articles from around the web. But, this week it’s a little more exciting since I’m going to be on a call with Suze Orman this afternoon. The nature of the call, what will be discussed, and what will ultimately come out of it is a bit uncertain, but I’ll be taking part in a Q&A session with some members of the media. Of course, if anything develops from the call, my questions aired, or anything else of interest to readers, I’ll be sure to pass the information along.

In addition, I’ve been getting into Twitter a bit more lately, and I decided to highlight my 100th follower. A small milestone to be sure, but it’s always fun to promote someone else. For this, there were actually two winners. Before heading to bed, I checked and noticed 99 followers. By morning, I had 100, but two new followers were on the list. That means someone also unfollowed. I don’t know if they unfollowed before the 100th joined, or after. So, I’ll just give a shout out to both:

Not only that, but there is fun little contest going on called the Shorty Awards. It’s a place where you can nominate twitter users. Since Five Cent Nickel was the first one to nominate me, I’ll direct you to one of his posts: What Happens When the Increased FDIC Insurance Limits Expire?  If you want to nominate me, it’s as easy as filling out this form. Or, feel free to just follow me on Twitter.

But enough of that, it’s time for this week’s links:

Investing in a Bear Market – Hopefully your investment strategy is designed to work regardless of the direction of the market, but for many people, that is not the case. Here are some tips to help you make the most of this bear market.

Stock Market Predictions From Bad News Bears – You have your bulls and your bears. Some people are optimistic about the future of the market, while others aren’t. But who’s saying what, and why do they feel the way they do? SVB highlights a group of the economists in the bear camp and shares what they think and why. As for me, I’m bearish in the short-term, but bullish in the long run.

How to Take a Loss on an IRA – When it comes to gains and losses inside your IRA, it doesn’t matter because it’s tax-deferred, right? Well, that’s normally what people do, but there is a way that you might be able to take a loss and use it for tax purposes. But, there are some restrictions, and it isn’t a good idea for everyone. Find out if it’s something you may want to consider.

Lazy Man’s Gift Guide 2008 – Whether you like it or not, the holiday season is upon us. That means most of us will be spending the next few days searching for and buying gifts. Well, if you’re like me and hate going out or hate shopping, it helps to have a gift guide that highlights some great gift ideas. Since I’m lazy like Lazy Man, this list was just what I needed.

Saving Energy with a Heat Pump – To be honest, I didn’t really understand what a heat pump was, so this post was quite informative. It’s certainly something to pay attention to when we look to buy or build a new house in the future.

Year End Insurance Policy Review – Tips for Lowering Rates & Checking Coverage – I hate insurance and dealing with insurance companies more than anyone, but that doesn’t mean you can try to ignore it. There are many ways you can find ways to reduce your premium and make sure your coverage is adequate, and the end of the year is a great time to cross that off your list.

The Stock Diversification Myth – Is stock diversification a complete myth? I’m not going to give anything away here, but you should check out this post by The Money Hawk to see how he comes to his conclusion.

Household Uses For Vinegar, The Ultimate Frugal Solution – I love vinegar. Anything pickled, and I’m game. But Frugal Dad isn’t talking about food in this post. Instead, he highlights many great uses for the very cheap liquid you can buy in the store. You might be surprised at how versatile it really is.

What Motivates You More: Frugality or Decluttering? – For me, it’s decluttering. I’m messy by nature, and the clutter piles up relentlessly. I don’t want to be messy and disorganized, it just happens. But it’s stressful, so being able to declutter and have a clean space is certainly more motivating than saving a few bucks for me.

Keeping Up With Your IRA: Tax Season Checklist – Keeping up with the theme of year end things to do, add an IRA checkup to the list. Time is winding down and the tax deadline will rapidly be approaching, so it’s a good time to get a jump start on making sure everything is in order. Here are a few things you might want to look over.

How to Use Your Credit Card without Going in Debt - Credit cards aren’t evil. They can ruin your life if not used properly, but they are still a great financial tool to help with cash management. So, here’s a lesson on how to use your credit card without going into debt.
