Friday Finance Findings for December 19th
Posted on Fri, 19th December, 2008 by Jeremy
Friday is here at last, and it’s the last Friday before Christmas. That means this weekend is the last weekend to get your shopping done. And the clock is really ticking for ordering items online to have them delivered in time. By now, you’re probably looking at paying a stiff premium for expedited shipping. Hopefully you were able to get most of your shopping done so that this weekend isn’t spent wandering through stores.
And the next couple of weeks are pretty busy with Christmas and new years, so this will likely be the last Friday update for 2008. I know that we’ll be hitting the road later this week to travel around and meet up with the family, and many others are doing the same. So, enjoy the articles this week, and here’s to a great 2009.

Deciding When to Refinance Your Mortgage -This is something I’ve been thinking about recently with all of the stuff going on with interest rates and mortgage relief, but I’m not sure it would be worth it. We’ve only been in the house 3 years and don’t have a ton of equity. So we’ll have to crunch the numbers and see if it’s worth a shot.
What if Saving Was Stupid -Savers are really getting the shaft lately. With low interest rates, even if you’re saving with one of the higher paying online banks like FNBO Direct, you’re only barely keeping up with inflation, if at all. Of course, having a savings, even if it isn’t earning interest can save you in an emergency.
Epson Workforce 600 Printer Holiday Giveaway! -Do you like free stuff? I know I do. SVB is giving away an awesome printer/fax/copier to her readers. Honestly, I’d kill to have one of these things. Our printer is a sorry pile of garbage. So, feel free to enter, but I hope I win!
10 Reasons Why Credit Unions Kick Ass -I know my credit union kicks ass. I still have one of our auto loans and a credit card through them. Unfortunately, the closest branch is 150 miles away, but the internet has my back.
150+ Ways to Save Money Over the Holidays -Are you looking for a comprehensive holiday savings list? Look no further. Frugal Trader has compiled a few tips of his own, and referenced other posts from across the web that provide a total of over 150 ways to save money this year.
The Federal Reserve Cut is Irrelevant -This is something I wanted to talk about earlier this week, but Flexo beat me to it. He does a good job at explaining how the record low rate cut really won’t change a whole lot.
Highlights of New Credit Card Rules - The new rules go into effect in mid-2010, but it is good news for consumers. Get all of the details on the new rules and see how they might affect you.
Larry Swedroe’s Thoughts on the Madoff Scandal - You’ve probably heard a little bit about the whole Madoff scandal, but if you want a real good read, check out what Larry Swedroe has to say over at All Financial Matters.

Great find!
I’ll have a busy winter break reading it!
