Friday Finance Findings for January 23rd

TGIF! Even though football is over until the Super Bowl, one of the best sports is at the midway point and another is just getting started. I’m talking about hockey and golf. The NHL All-Star game and events are this weekend, which is always good fun. In addition, the PGA Tour just recently got underway for the 2009 season. What I like most about golf getting underway is that it means spring is rapidly approaching, and it won’t be long before I’m out on the course. And after this brutal winter, I sure hope spring hurries up.

Financial Planning With a Special Needs Child – We all need to do some financial planning, but what about those with a special needs child? What else needs to be considered, and how can you plan for these needs? Here are a few main things to consider.

2008 Federal Tax Brackets Explained -So, tax time is approaching, and you’re finally starting to get ready to do your taxes. But what does all of this stuff mean? What’s AGI? What are the tax brackets, and how does it affect you? Ben has put together a detailed post explaining everything.

How Long Do We Really Need to Keep Those Papers? – Our lives are filled with paper. From bank statements to marriage licenses, we have a lot of papers with important information on them. But just how long do you need to keep those papers? Are some safe to throw out immediately, or should you hang on to them for a few years?

Is It Time to Rethink Risk? – This is a conversation I have with people on a daily basis. Right now, everyone is thinking about market risk, but they will be happy to take on many other types of risk just to avoid market risk. Remember, you can’t eliminate all risk, only shift to different types of risk.

How To Work Full Time While You’re In College -I never understood the prospect of NOT working while in college. When I was in school, everyone had a job. It might not have been a full-time job, but everyone worked nights, weekends, or whatever it took to help pay for school or provide some spending money.

Bargaineering Name Change & New Forums! – Remember Blueprint for Financial Prosperity? Well, now it’s just called Bargaineering, which seems appropriate since that’s what the URL is. Jim announces the name change, has a new logo, and has also opened some new forums, which I’m glad to be helping out with. Stop on over!

Frugal People Focus Too Much On The Outgo -I think Frugal Dad is on to something. I’ve noticed a similar trend with some frugal friends. They get so caught up on saving, that they completely miss out on other opportunities. Bettering your finances requires balance between spending less and earning more.

Can Debit Cards Protect Consumers against Fraud? -A bit argument against debit cards is the protection differences when compared to credit cards. Well, SVB gets some answers to clear that up. Actually, we had a debit card incident a few years ago, and it was handled just as good, if not better than our credit cards.

8 Fundamental Money Lessons for Kids -This is a topic I’m going to be paying much closer attention to in the coming years. Our first child is on the way, and while I spend most of my days helping adults with their money, I’m at a bit of a loss when it comes to teaching kids about money. This will be increasingly important.

Save Money On Airfare -Flying sucks, but sometimes that’s the only option. I’d almost rather hitchhike across the country than fly, but that isn’t very efficient. So if you have to fly, the least you can do is make it as inexpensive as possible.

Looking Through New Eyes – Are you stuck in your ways and beliefs? It’s not easy, but you should be challenging yourself and engage others. Try to see the world through new eyes.

TurboTax and Quicken Giveaway – Do you like free stuff? Then head on over to Five Cent Nickel and enter to win TurboTax or Quicken. Hey, with taxes right around the corner, the TurboTax could be a good score!

I like the “Looking Through New Eyes” tip. I totally agree, it’s our beliefs that holds us back from succeeding to our full potetial. It’s time to start new positive beliefs that will ultimately change your reality to what you want it to be. Our minds creates our reality.
