They are great for shorter term trades and when you want to gain exposure to different areas or investment strategies that might not exist elsewhere. But I agree, unless you're doing all of your investing in larger chunks of money, the transaction costs will probably outweigh any benefits. Weakonomist, that’s exactly how I use ETFs. As a one-time purchase, ETFs are better than mutual funds. I am looking into ETF investing instead of stocks. I can buy and ETF that shorts oil, or gold, which keeps me from having to actually short it myself.
