If you haven’t already noticed it, I’ve launched a new coupon page here on the site. This page will highlight many different coupon codes, special offers, and online deals. These offers are brought to you by the wonderful folks at Savings.com. You may have used their deal site before, so if so, you’ll already be familiar with how it works. I was lucky enough to meet with the Savings.com crew at the financial blogger conference this past weekend and they have put together a great resource to allow sites like this one to integrate the coupons seamlessly.

So, how do you get to the deal page? Simple. I’ve added a navigation tab right at the top of ever page as shown here:

Once you get to the deal page you will be presented with some of the most popular offers. And here’s the best part. The deals are continuously update and always current, so you don’t have to wonder whether or not the offer is still going on. I don’t know about you, but one thing I hated about many coupon sites is that you have to jump through a lot of hoops only to find out that the deal has expired. Since these offers are updated behind the scenes and I don’t have to worry about keeping tabs on the status of all of them, you won’t have to worry about wasting your time.

The other great thing is that you have the ability to search by store or keyword, narrow deals down to particular categories, and much more. Here’s what the page looks like:

Pretty slick, right? For now I am just focusing on the main coupon page, but I’ll slowly be rolling out some customized pages tailored to specific products and events. This will come in handy for the holidays for sure. And finally, while you’re checking out the new deals feature, be sure to take a look at the pages I have put up for savings accounts, credit card offers, and mortgage rates. Lots of potential to save money if you know where to look.

Can you believe it’s already the second week of November? Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away and then we’re full-swing into the holiday season. It’s a wonderful time of year, but it’s probably one of the most difficult times to be frugal. We’re entertaining, taking time off of work, visiting family, and often pressured into buying gifts. This can create a big drain on the bank account or credit cards if we’re not careful.

Even though it’s harder to save money this time of year, that just means this Festival of Frugality couldn’t come at a better time. This week you’ll find tips that range from saving money immediately to planning your finances for a frugal 2011. So, get ready to save some money and if you are on Twitter, be sure to follow me for even more money-saving tips.

Are you tired of all the investing gimmicks out there? Invest in gold, buy commodities, short stocks, trade Forex, and all of that garbage? You’re not alone. Companies are targeting investors and trying to lure them into more uncommon investments in part thanks to the weak economy and stock market performance over the last few years. After all, if you lost 50% of your retirement account in just two years you’re probably open to trying something new and have your doubts about traditional investing.

The problem is that people begin flocking to alternative investments only to misunderstand the true risks involved and end up making matters even worse. There’s money to be made everywhere, but not all investments are suitable for everyone. Once you abandon traditional investment selection and portfolio management strategies you’re on your own. So, rather than trying to time the market by risking money on investments being sold by infomercials, it’s time to get back to basics.

That’s why I’ve put together Invest Like a Pro. It’s a collection of some old and new material that will teach a beginner how to choose mutual or index funds, how fees work, how to create an asset allocation strategy, and monitor and rebalance the portfolio over the years. No gimmicks here. Just sound investment advice for regular investors that can help you manage a portfolio like a pro.

Inside the book:

Learn how funds charge fees and how to minimize them.

Learn how to use Morningstar to research and compare investments.

Learn about asset allocation, correlation, and true diversification.

Learn how and when to rebalance your portfolio.

Sample Pages:

Download the Book:

All you need to do is fill out the form below to get instant download access. After verifying your email you’ll receive a direct download link. In addition to this book you’ll get exclusive personal finance content not found on the blog, access to additional books, and much more.

You may have recalled a month or two ago when I mentioned there was a new finance series in the works and they were looking for people and families to feature on the show. Well, a few more details are out and you have just a few days left to throw your hat in the ring. This new series will take people who need a little help with their finances and pair them up with an expert to work with them. In a sense, you’d be working one-on-one and get some free financial advice.

The main reason I’m bringing this up is because I may be one of the experts featured on the show so it would be great if I was to end up working directly with one of my readers. Either way, you have until the 26th to send your information in. Here’s the information they gave me to share:

Submission Information

NAME:

LOCATION:

CONTACT INFORMATION:

A RECENT PHOTO OF YOU AND YOUR FAMILY:

Have you ever wondered how your spending and saving habits stack up against others? Sure, we all have a general idea based on what our friends and family might be doing, but what about out there in the real world as a whole? Are you spending more or less than others in your city? Is your location that much more expensive to live in compared to other areas of the country? And does having a child really change how much you end up spending or cut back on how much you can save?

These are the questions that Bundle can answer. This is the site I’ve been working with for the past few months behind closed doors. I’m one of the community editors. I think this new site has a lot of potential and it’s simply just a lot of fun to play with. For the first time, a site has compiled spending data for everyone across all areas of the country. Now, you can pull up your own city’s spending data and compare yourself to the average, or you can compare two locations or two different demographics. It tracks data for most locations right down to the stores people spend their money.

I know it’s a little hard to visualize by me just explaining it, so here’s a video that does a much better job.

More About Bundle

Bundle is still in the very early stages so there are still a lot of interesting features that will be added in the coming months. But what I like about it so far is just the ability to compare myself with others in my area and see how I fit in. I’ve learned a few interesting facts already. For instance, I spend about 75% less on eating out than everyone else in my area, and the entire country for that matter. I’ve also learned that married couples in their 30s with children have an average of just $250 put away for their child’s college education! It’s amazing what you can learn about your neighbors by sifting through the data.

But for a little more background, here’s a snippet from bundle’s about page:

Fortunately, nobody’s making decisions in a vacuum. We’ve all wondered what our co-workers make, and how in the world our constantly broke friend can afford those three-week vacations. That’s okay. Wanting to know how people like you spend and save isn’t simply voyeurism – it’s the first step to getting ahead, and the answers can be quite an education. It’s why we created Everybody’s Money, the most comprehensive collection of free spending and savings data on the web. (Geeks, dig in! For more info, check out our FAQ.)

So, if you want to find out if you’re the only one in your neighborhood with a grocery bill in the stratosphere, it’s in there. And if you want to find a better way, we’ve got ideas from experts, as well as people who are just like us (which is to say, ahem, not experts). We’ve also enlisted some top-notch advisors, including leading behavioral economist Dan Ariely (who can explain why our financial decisions can be so irrational) and Sheryl Garrett, founder of the Garrett Planning Network and a leader in helping make objective financial advice accessible to all people.

Anyway, I hope to see you there. I’ll be on the site moderating and creating content throughout the week and you may see my face pop up on occasion. But feel free to head on over and take a look, dig into some data, and share it with your friends. I’m sure it will get even better as the site begins to grow, so here’s your chance to get in on the ground floor.

So, go check it out!

In case you missed it, I was a guest on the popular Personal Finance Hour hosted by Jim from Bargaineering and J.D. Roth over at Get Rich Slowly. Each Monday they spend an hour discussing a finance topic, chat with listeners, and take calls to answer questions. This week the topic was retirement. Given my background in retirement planning it was a good fit to have me on and discuss some of the common retirement planning mistakes and considerations for both the young and old alike.

While you may have missed the live show you can still play the episode at any time. You can find it on the Blog Talk Radio site, iTunes, or even use the embedded widget found on this page. Some of the highlights from the show talked about the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to saving for retirement. I say the biggest mistake is simply not saving enough. People often underestimate how much they really need to save or wait too long to start saving. It’s one of those things where time can either be your greatest asset or your biggest enemy. Use the time you have wisely and save appropriately and you’ll be in good shape. Let time slip away and you can’t get it back and it’s very hard to catch up.

So, if you’re interested in retirement planning this is a good episode to listen to. And of course, be sure to tune in every Monday as there are always good topics up for discussion on the Personal Finance Hour.

Have you been looking for a discount online broker? Look no further than TradeKing. I’ve written about them in the past because they offer some of the lowest commissions in the industry and back it with fantastic customer service and trading interface. The rules are pretty simple. You just have to create a new account, fund it with $2,500 or more, and then place a trade. You’ll then receive a $50 credit in your account. It’s that easy.

Sure, it’s an easy way to get $50, but is it worth the trouble to sign up with TradeKing? I’d say that if you are looking to occasionally purchase individual stocks or trade options then you can’t do much better than TradeKing. I’ve had a number of brokerage accounts at TD Ameritrade, Schwab, Zecco, and TradeKing, but in terms of pricing and the online interface I really enjoy TradeKing. But don’t just take my word for it. You’re basically being given the opportunity to try them out for $50. If you place a trade or two and find out it isn’t for you it’s easy enough to transfer your funds elsewhere. Open your TradeKing account today and receive a $50 bonus! Offer ends on October 31st, so act fast.

This offer has expired (effective 11/30/09).

Here are some highlights that make TradeKing stand out:

Fair and Simple Pricing Structure

No matter how big or small your account or how often you trade, we charge just $4.95 per trade plus 65 cents per option contract. Even for Broker-assisted trades. There are no account minimums and no hidden fees. And no, we’re not pulling your leg.

Superior Customer Service

When you call TradeKing, you don’t have to navigate an endless system of phone menus. You can talk to a real live Broker, with short wait times, any time. You can even contact a Broker instantly using our online chat feature, if you’d rather type than talk. Rest assured, whatever service you need on your account, we make it easy for you to get it.

Innovative Trading Tools That are Free to All Clients

When you open an account, you’ll get access to our Profit + Loss Calculator, Probability Calculator, Technical Analysis Tool, Scanning Tools that work for your individual options and complete option strategies, and more. And best of all, unlike some of the other guys, we don’t charge you any fees to use them – no matter the size of your account.

User-friendly Trading Platform with Advanced Orders

Our trading interface is extremely intuitive and easy to use. Even ordering advanced option strategies like butterflies and condors is as simple as clicking a few checkboxes. And for you serious option traders, we offer a full complement of advanced orders – including trailing stops, contingent orders, one-cancels-other, one-triggers-other and GTC on spreads. What’s not to love about that?

An Expansive Learning Center

We empower investors to make more intelligent trading decisions by providing an ever-growing wealth of knowledge. You’ll get access to resources like the online Options Playbook – featuring, 40 different option strategies for any market conditions and all levels of expertise, live events such as webinars, The Options Guy Blog, overviews of how to best use our suite of trading tools, podcasts, market insights from industry experts, and much more.

An Innovative Online Trader Network

For many of our clients, this is the most fun feature on TradeKing.com. You can create your own profile and choose to share your trading activity using our ‘certified trade’ feature. See what others are trading and the rationale behind them and see how their trades are actually performing. You can connect with other traders, share your thoughts and learn new tricks for a changing market.

Do you like this site? Are you on Facebook? Well, now you can have a little bit of both. I have set up a Facebook Fan page for Generation X Finance. I actually set up a fan page a long time ago but at the time I messed up and created it as a local business fan page and it was not set up how I wanted it. Now, everything should be set up properly and I can begin using it to interact with you as readers and hopefully generate some interesting discussion.

There are a couple of reasons for doing this and some added value for you. For one, a lot of people don’t necessarily subscribe to RSS feeds yet spend a lot of time on social networking sites. By becoming a fan of the site you’ll actually get an update on your Facebook wall when I’ve made a new post. Not only that, but Facebook is very interactive. Sure, you can leave a comment on a post here and carry on a bit of a discussion, but it’s fairly linear. With the fan page anyone will be able to generate and start discussions, either about a recent post or any topic that comes up. And with so many users on Facebook it’s easy to get a conversation started, share links with your other Facebook friends, and we can all benefit by learning more about money.

So, go ahead and become a fan. It just takes one click. I’ll be popping in and out of the site to welcome everyone, ask you questions, and hopefully learn more about everyone.
