I would recommend Shorebank's High Yield Savings Account, which currently offers a 3.15% APY. They also target a lot of their investment to local communities, so your money not only earns more but also helps create jobs.

I own an HSBC savings account and the interest is at about 2.5 right now. They just lowered their rates as well. I agree with paying down any debt you have. It's better to do that first. The interest rates on any debt you own are mostly likely going to be higher than 2.5%.

Thank you for the great advise. I'm currently working on settling my debts, I've drafted a few plans on how i'm going to pull it off, which includes a second income and proper budgeting. Such posts help me to improve my plan.

I am an INGDirect customer. I was pleased with how easy it was to set it up. I recommend this strongly to folks who want to save in a separate account.

Another way you can make money off of credit cards if you have really good credit is to take a cash advance on your 0% credit cards, and then put the money in a saving account for as long as the 0% offer is valid. When the O% offer is up, take the money out of the savings account, return the amount you took from the credit card, and keep the interest you got from the bank.

FNBO Direct just lowered rates to 2.80%. They're feeling the pinch too.

Check out the reward checking accounts with rates as high as 6%. They have lists at Money-Rates.com and Bankrate.com. You have to do online banking to qualify.

Diana, good call on the TIPS. I forgot to mention them, but I'd put them in the same category as CDs in terms of when they should be used, even though there is a secondary market for them that makes them more liquid. For most people with smaller amounts of money and a time horizon of one year or more, I-bonds might be another option, especially since the interest can be tax deferred until redemption.

Good point and thanks for bringing this up.

Should one consider TIPS as they are meant to keep up with inflation?

Great advice as usual, yet in the larger scheme of things, with those interest rates being so low, there is certainly a feeling that someone out there (ahem, the gov) is trying to get us to spend more money by making saving look unattractive :)
