Generation X Finance was created in late 2006 as a means for discussing financial issues that are important to this unique generation. Generally speaking, it includes those who were born between 1965-1980, sandwiched between the Baby Boomers and Generation Y. That isn’t to say the topics here aren’t applicable to others, but the primary focus is to help people get their debt under control, save money, establish a successful career or personal business, invest in yourself, help improve your credit score (but what is a good credit score?), and begin to accumulate wealth as we work toward saving the right amount for retirement.
I wanted to put together a resource that was written for this generation, by this generation. There are plenty of resources out there that are written by individuals who can provide a wealth of financial knowledge, but they may lack the connection to the unique issues and circumstances of this generation. My commentary, along with the great discussion by the readers provide a unique and helpful resource tailored to Generation X’s financial concerns. So if you are interested in learning how to become a millionaire please do follow along.
A Little About Me
My name is Jeremy Vohwinkle, and I’ve spent a number of years working in the finance industry providing financial advice to regular investors and those participating in employer-sponsored retirement plans such as 401(k)s and 403(b)s. When it comes to working with your 401k I help advice people on taking out loans from it, rolling it over into other account, why should not borrowing from it, max 401k contributions and everything in between. I hold the Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor (CRPC®) designation from the College for Financial Planning and a few securities and insurance licenses. I help people make better financial choices while still working, and help those who are preparing for retirement to establish a plan that will provide the lifestyle that they dream of. In addition to providing retirement-specific advice, I also occasionally hold seminars and write for other media outlets that cover more broad financial topics.
Prior to specializing in retirement planning, I spent a couple years working as a financial advisor for both a financial planning company and a bank. In both cases, it was a commission gig, and it was more important to become a salesman than a planner. It didn’t take long for me to realize that this wasn’t how I wanted to spend my career and I knew it wasn’t the best way to provide advice to the people who need it most. My goal has always been to be in an educational role that helps people make better decisions with their money — from simply creating a budget to creating a sound investment portfolio. Through my current work as a retirement planning specialist and with this website and other writing outlets, I have accomplished that goal.
You may also recognize me from the Financial Planning topic over at About.com. I began writing for them in early 2007, and it has been a great way to reach even more people and provide information that people can use to improve their finances. The About.com site covers a very wide array of topics that go beyond some of the issues I talk about here, so you may find additional resources that prove to be helpful.
There are so many different financial services out there for each of us to use. I try to keep tabs on them and review them as they come up. When it comes to trading I really like TradeKing a lot, but Scottrade is also good. For checking your credit report I like Credit Karma a lot. There are a lot of options when it comes to banking I like Ally Bank, but I also keep this money saving tab up to date so you can check out some other good ones.
I also really enjoy cooking. I have have a few of my favorite recipes included here on the site. Two of my favorites are my chili recipe and my pulled pork recipe. I do try to eat healthy foods that are made fresh. Making foods from scratch is also fun for me so I make things like applesauce from scratch, I do enjoy eating out as well especially when kids get to eat for free.
In the Media
My work through this site and About.com combined with my position in the finance industry has led to a number of media mentions and interviews. Whether it’s print, online, or on the radio, I’ve worked with a number of media outlets to provide unique insight on a variety of financial topics. You can see some of the latest media mentions here, or if you’re a journalist working on an upcoming story, feel free to contact me.
Contacting Me
If you need to contact me for any reason, the easiest way is via the contact form. I also welcome any media or press inquiries. If you are seeking advertising opportunities, you can find out a little bit more on the advertise page. For all inquiries, I make an effort to reply to each if appropriate.
